Fleet managers at last can keep an eye on their trailer stock via the Internet 24/7 from the comfort of their home or office. Detached from a tractor, a trailer is not an easy animal to keep track of! Power is not available to operate a GSM/GPS tracking system and the cost of such a system, fitted to each and every trailer is highly prohibitive with respect to hardware cost, battery usage and cellular running costs.
Radio-Tech's trailer management system can tell you which depot each trailer is at, how many times the doors have been opened and what is the temperature history of the trailer (to meet food safety transportation legislation) Our unique solution, developed in conjunction with the OEM Group, London, is tailored for the tens of thousands of companies that haul on a hub-hub or hub-depot basis. Effectively each trailer is fitted with a long-range, low cost, radio beacon, temperature transmitter or wireless security seal.
Whenever within an earshot of a hub or depot, the beacon's transmission is picked up by a wide area collection device - called a cellular hub concentrator. The CHC extracts a unique identity code from the transmitters and time stamps the message before forwarding to a remote web server over a highly secure GPRS VPN network supplied by Wyless plc.
The web server is hosted in a secure "data centre" and connected directly to the Wyless VPN. It automatically extracts the temperature, security seal and identification data, logging it and assigning it to a depot/hub effectively locating each trailer. A cross relational database is used to translate the beacon identities into the trailer numbering system that you are familiar with, displaying your trailers actual name.
The net result is that at a glance you can see where each and every trailer is, that is, aside from those on the road. The benefits are enormous - aside from knowing where everything is, and you can spot trailers that are seldom used, others which are over used as well as the temperature and security history of the trailer from its last outing.
The almost live data also permits the manager to move trailers to ensure availability, plan maintenance, more accurately estimate the mileage that each trailer travels and on the side keep a track of driver time keeping.
Setup and running costs are a fraction of the conventional vehicle tracking systems where the SIM card to trailer/tractor is 1:1. In the case of our hub/depot based system the cellular cost is effectively reduced approximately by the ratio of the number of hubs/depots divided by the number of trailers. This can itself bring about a cost reduction as much as 75%.
